About our program….
The Pet Therapy started in 2006 as a community service of the Clark County Red Cross. Newman, the "founding member", has visited many local nursing homes, disaster shelters, rehab facilities and assisted-living facilities. Our primary focus is to provie comfort and companionship to our community by sharing our dogs with residents and patients. The program has grown and our dogs are waiting to work their way into your heart!
Pup-Tastic Teamwork!
Based on word-of-mouth praise, as well as media exposure, we receive requests for pet therapy weekly. Love comes in all shapes and sizes at the Clark County Red Cross. From a 6-pound Yorkie to a 190-pound English Mastiff, and everything in-between, we can find a match for you or your facility.
All our dogs and their handlers have received their Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification and have been evaluated by a professional trainer to ensure they are good candidates for our program. Some of our dogs, such as Newman, are also certified by Therapy Dogs International.
All of our human volunteers in our program undergo a background check. All teams are covered by insurance provided by the Amerinan Red Cross.
Places to Go and People to See
Currently, we have visitation aggrements with many facilites in Southern Indiana and the Louisville Metro area, such as rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, Alzheimer patient centers, retirement villages, hospitals and cancer centers. As our membership increases, our ability to reach new facilities will follow suit. Many of our teams reside in Louisville and we are available to take requests throughout the entire Kentuckiana area.
