Clark County Red Cross and the Boy Scouts of America

The Clark Co. Chapter is happy to continue the longstanding partnership with Boys Scouts of America and work together in joint efforts such as Preparedness Training, youth leadership mentoring and safe places to encourage youth participation in both groups’ programs.

Venture Crew

The Chapter is the sponsor for Venture Crew #4911.  Crews are comprised of boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 20, interested in the outdoors, leadership, individual and team skill building and the camaraderie of Venture Crews.

Young people interested in participating in Crew #4911 should contact Bev Tavelli, Crew Advisor, at 502-594-1186 or Harriet Rutledge at icyurn2scouting@yahoo.com.

Wilderness First Aid Basics

The Chapter offers Red Cross training in outdoor First Aid and Safety through its Wilderness First Aid Basics course.  Participants in the WFAB program will receive training for injuries such as:

Wounds

Head & Spinal Injury

Sudden Illness

Major Bites & Stings

Abdominal & Extremity Injuries

In addition, students will learn about Emergency Action Steps, Patient Assessment, Preventing Disease Transmission and other vital information.

Students will receive three textbooks – “Wilderness First Aid Basics Student Guide”, “Mountaineering First Aid” and “ When Help is Delayed” as part of the course.  Upon successful completion of the course, each student will also receive a WFAB patch.

Additionally, Scouts and leaders who complete Wilderness First Aid Basics meet BSA Philmont Ranch participation requirements that begin in 2008.

2008 First Aid Training Requirement for Philmont Crews

First Aid training is important for the safety of the crew while participating in Philmont’s backcountry or at the Double H High Adventure Base. For several years crews were encouraged to obtain a higher level of training than the American Red Cross Standard First Aid or equivalent. The recommended course was the 16-hour American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid Basic.

Beginning with the 2008 hiking season the requirement for participation is that each crew must have someone certified in a 16 hour wilderness first aid course from a nationally-recognized provider.

As stated in the “Council and Unit Planning Guide” the 2008 First Aid and CPR Certification Requirement reads as follows:

“Philmont requires that a least one person, preferably two, (either an advisor or a youth participant) in each crew be currently certified in American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid or the equivalent* and CPR from the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross or the equivalent. The American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid is a sixteen-hour course designed to help in situations when help is not readily available. Several hours may be required for Philmont staff to reach a remote backcountry location after a message is delivered to the nearest staffed camp. First aid and CPR training will result in proper and prompt attention being given to injuries and/or illnesses. You must present current certification cards upon check in to verify this requirement.”

If you are interested in participating in a Wilderness First Aid Basics class, contact Harriet Rutledge at icyurn2scouting@yahoo.com.

Sports Safety Training

We also offer Sport Safety Training.  Completion of this class is part of the Five Core Requirements of the Venture Scouts Quest Award.

BAT & FACT

BAT (Basic Aid Training) and FACT (First Aid for Children Today), safety and First Aid training for younger children are also available.  These are introductory level classes that do not result in Red Cross certification, but provide information for youngsters to begin learning lifetime skills in safety and preparedness.
